Focused H & P Cases

Project Summary:

 The purpose of the site is to provide medical students with examples of patient cases similar to what they will experience in their clerkships.  

The videos show from a student’s perspective, multiple parts involved in patient care beginning with an initial focused H&P, a case presentation to an attending physician, a follow-up visit with the patient, and written records for the patient encounters. There are separate cases for each clerkship.   

Each clerkship material contains  pre-video and post-video surveys to assess the utility and functionality of these cases as part of a student’s overall medical school experience.

The educational website was designed to provide information for medical students in their second year of study about  the Neurologic Exam. The materials teach students how to perform a screening neurologic exam, how to interpret abnormal findings in a screening neurologic exam, neuroanatomy underlying neurologic exam elements and the location of lesions if abnormalities are found on a screening neurologic exam.

Sections of the website  include online lecture segments, exam demonstrations and videos of abnormal findings.

The eLearning website with integrated modules was designed for the CHM OB/GYN clerkships to provide a learning platform that integrates various educational tools and technologies for improving communication of clinical knowledge, delivery and standardization of the clerkship curriculum across six campuses in a flexible environment.   

The eLearning modules supplement  basic student knowledge on three pathologies: Vaginitis, Amenorrhea and Third Trimester Bleeding. The modules offer interactive web-based video clips with simulating doctor-patient encounters, self-paced learning objectives, short video lectures with didactic information, audio summaries, relevant images and self-assessment sections.  

The modules enhance medical education through problem-based learning, effective use of multimedia and web-based resources.

Project Summary:

Faculty: Dr. Cindy Arvidson ↔ Type of Project: Website Design

A website for the CHM Medical Microbiology and Immunology course was designed to serve as the hosting platform for a set of virtual, interactive bacteriology labs (developed by vuDAT)  to allow students to learn a variety of tests that are done in a diagnostic microbiology laboratory to identify bacterial pathogens from patient samples.  

Five different modules are available in the site and each module demonstrates a different laboratory test.  Using the Virtual Interactive Bacteriology Laboratory practice modules, students are given a opportuntiy to practice and learn to perform and interpret various basic lab procedures ( e.g., interpret a gram stain, learn to streak an agar plate to isolate bacteria, become familiar with different types of media for isolation and cultivation of pathogenic bacteria, etc. ), before setting foot on the physical lab space. 

Later on, in the real laboratory setting students are asked to apply the culture and tests learned in the virtual modules to identify bacterial unknowns associated with clinical case histories in a small group format.

Project Summary:

  The Pain Relief for Terminally Ill Patients website was created to help students build on knowledge they acquired in the first two years of medical school about the importance of pain relief and the basic principles underlying good pain management. These educational modules approach this knowledge in a more patient-focused way where students learn to assess and treat a patient in pain.         

It includes self-instructional modules with didactic information, images, interactive case studies, and practice questions with feedback for student self-assessment. Didactic materials are linked to online supplemental resources to enhance students understanding of the materials. Students can navigate modules linearly or jump to specific topics in the site.

Neuropathology Navigator

 Project Summary:

Faculty: Dr. Kathy Lovell ↔ Type of Project: Website Design

This project covers the neuropathology content taught for second year medical students. It includes didactic information, images with interactive descriptions, case studies, and practice questions with feedback for 10 neuropathology topics. The website can be used online or downloaded.  Students can navigate linearly or easily just to specific topics or subtopics.  Various types of interactive exercises are included for practice.

The project is designed for students to proceed through the content at their own pace, with practice cases and questions available for students to test their mastery of the material. Images have interactive arrows and pathology descriptions so that students can check their understanding.  Feedback for questions reinforces major points to enhance learning.
