Travel Medicine Online

Project Summary:

Faculty: Dr. Mary Nettleman ↔ Type of Project: Online Lecture

Several didactic materials were developed and integrated as part of an online course curriculum for teaching travel medicine to medical students. The goal of these materials was to provide instructional tools on travel medicine appropriate for medical students during their pre-clinical years. The materials are also appropriate for use in a problem-based learning module, self-guided learning or could be assigned as part of a clinical clerkship.

The materials included  a narrated slide presentation, and a video interview to demonstrate taking a pre-travel patient care history. In addition, iPod and PDA versions of the narrated presentation were created to allow portability of the content for just in time learning.

Project Summary:

Faculty: Dr. Deborah Wagenaar ↔ Type of Project: Online Lecture

A series of core lectures were recorded over the course of a year for use by medical students during their Psychiatry clerkships. The lectures cover the following four main units:

  • Clinical Skills
  • psychopathology and Disease Classification
  • Disease Prevention, Management, and Therapeutics
  • Professionalism, ethics and the Law

The goals of the on-line lecture series were: 1) to develop consistent curriculum across all clerkship sites. 2) to help the student recognize the signs and symptoms of major mental illness. 3) to help the student understand the types and indications for psychiatric treatment for major mental disorders.  4) to expose the student to psychopathology throughout the lifespan.  5) to provide a portable user-friendly mechanism to learn about psychiatry and link this to clinical cases seen during the clerkship and  6) to increase awareness of cultural differences and health care disparities in psychiatric care. Additionally, the lectures can be used as a review tool for students preparing to take the NMBE shelf exam.

Different lecture formats (Flash , Windows Media Video, iPod, MP3) are available to students to facilitate access and review of the Psychiatry clerkship materials.

Faculty: Dr. Kathy Lovell ↔ Type of Project: Website Design

The educational website was designed to provide information for medical students in their second year of study about  the Neurologic Exam. The materials teach students how to perform a screening neurologic exam, how to interpret abnormal findings in a screening neurologic exam, neuroanatomy underlying neurologic exam elements and the location of lesions if abnormalities are found on a screening neurologic exam.

Sections of the website  include online lecture segments, exam demonstrations and videos of abnormal findings.

 Project Summary:

Faculty: Dr. Patricia Obando ↔ Type of Project: Website Design

The eLearning website with integrated modules was designed for the CHM OB/GYN clerkships to provide a learning platform that integrates various educational tools and technologies for improving communication of clinical knowledge, delivery and standardization of the clerkship curriculum across six campuses in a flexible environment.

The eLearning modules supplement  basic student knowledge on three pathologies: Vaginitis, Amenorrhea and Third Trimester Bleeding. The modules offer interactive web-based video clips with simulating doctor-patient encounters, self-paced learning objectives, short video lectures with didactic information, audio summaries, relevant images and self-assessment sections.

The modules enhance medical education through problem-based learning, effective use of multimedia and web-based resources.

Faculty: Dr. Jane Turner ↔ Type of Project: Online Lecture

The goal of this online lecture module is for students to gain an understanding of what clinicians are looking for when evaluating children and tracking their development.

Videos of children are presented throughout the module to provide the students with an opportunity to see some of the behaviors that physicians will encounter and that they need to evaluate and  track.
The module is available to students in streaming and downloadable format and contains an index menu that allows students to access any part of the lecture during playback.

Faculty: Dr. Jane Turner ↔ Type of Project: Online Lecture

This is an introductory lecture to the patient-physician relationship course. The online lecture is one of three components used to introduce the topic of confidentiality. The module integrates a brief tour of web resources that students will later use and reference in small group discussions.

Another component of the lecture is a quiz with audio commentary feedback from the faculty.  The purpose of the quiz is to help stimulate thought and discussion when students meet in their small groups.
